Club History.

The club was founded in 1937. In 1936 the Borough of Southgate councillors were aware that neighbouring councils provided facilities for bowling and planned to provide a bowling green in Arnos Park.

At that time the council's committee were instructed to find suitable work for the unemployed, whereupon 60 men were engaged for various schemes, 20 of which were allocated to levelling and construction of the foundation of the Bowling Green.

In June 1937 a tender for the provision of laying a Cumberland Turf Green, building a rockery bank with some pathways and iron fencing was accepted for the sum of £730 and was carried out by J & J Proven Ltd. The work was completed by 7th October 1937. (The Green was improved when concrete edges were added in 1953/54.)

The Pavilion tender was accepted for the sum of £2000 and was duly built.

Mr H.H.Marks of 92 Morton Way who was interested in the formation of a Bowling Club for the new green stated that 27 persons were interested in the project at a meeting held at his house on 4th October 1937. This resulted in the holding of a Public Meeting at which the following resolution was put – “That this meeting of ratepayers of Southgate form themselves into a Bowling Club in Arnos Park and that the Borough Council be informed.” The resolution was passed with 45 persons in favour.

The Arnos Bowling Club started with 47 Playing Members of which 8 were Ladies and 12 Honorary members. The cost for a Season Ticket & Locker for playing members was £1-10-0d. (£1.50p) Club badge was two shillings. (10p!)

The sum of £36 was raised by club members to provide the necessary furniture.
